Sheringham BeachLife outreach draws crowds again

2016: The BeachLife activity outreach for children and young people on Sheringham cliff top and beach last week was another great success, which attracted around 250 children and young people. Tony Rothe reports.

This was the fifth successive summer that BeachLife has taken place, and each year the event has built on the success of the previous years. It is a joint venture by the churches in Sheringham, aimed at engaging with local youngsters, who make up around two thirds of those attending, as well as holidaymakers.

A team member said: “There are nearly 60 volunteers on the team, and we happily devote a week to sharing the Good News with the youngsters in the glorious setting of the clifftops and beach in Sheringham. And this year we had fabulous weather as well!”

The activities each day included the “Beach Special”, where all ages came together at the cliff-top marquee on The Leas for music, games, drama and fun, and to introduce the day’s theme, which this year was the Rio Olympic games. A popular feature this year was the gunge tank, with at least one leader getting “gunged” each day.

The mornings also included the “Going Deeper” sessions where the children and young people split into age-groups to explore that day’s theme in more depth before breaking for lunch.

BeachLife 2016 inflatables 600The afternoons comprised a family tide fight, beach games and giant inflatables, which included an assault course, demolition ball and goal shooting. The week was rounded off with a family buffet on the Friday, followed by a carnival-style procession led by the Norwich Samba Band, who held workshops on the beach to teach the young people how to play the percussion instruments.

Evening activities for young people included the return of the popular “Sheropoly” trail around the town, a quiz and chips night, crafts, and swimming at the local Splash pool, all of which were well attended.

Team member and administrator Constance Tyce said : “I love being a member of the team. Everybody of all ages and many different skills come together to provide a fantastic mission for children and young people. I am also enriched spiritually by having the opportunity to worship together.”

Next year’s outreach is expected to run from Tuesday August 29 to Friday September 1 2017. But Sheringham youngsters will not have to wait until next summer to continue the fun, as the team are already planning for a Light Party on Monday October 31, and another “BeachLife Extra” Fun Day on Friday February 17 during half term.
