Darren speaks on importance of prayer at Norwich lunch

The importance of prayer and making time to listen to God was the message of Oak Grove Community Church senior leader Darren Woodward to Christian leaders at the latest Transforming Norwich lunch on October 4.

“Prayer can easily become just another item on my “to-do” list. It shouldn’t be but will be if I don’t prioritise,” said Darren.

“Martin Luther said ‘I have so much to do today that I need to spend three hours in prayer in order to get it done’,” said Darren.

“Funnily enough, I find that if I prioritise God then the to-do list doesn’t seem so onerous or quite so pressing and it just seems to get done.”

“What you do matters but who you are matters more,” he said. “Jesus spent time in prayer with his dad regularly – so should we.

“My challenge is to listen a little bit more. God is interested in what is going on in my life and in my head and my heart as well. If I discipline myself to listen he might just have something to say back.

“To sit in silence and wait for something to happen is tough for me, but if I do it for 20 or 30 minutes, no agenda, empty my head - it is unbelievable. My temptation is to fill the gaps with words. It is about rhythm and regularity. I am convinced that a little bit of structure is very helpful,” said Darren.

The lunch was held at Oak Grove Chapel and the next leaders lunch is the Christmas one on December 6 at King’s, more details to follow.
