Occasional Ceilidh Band 750AT

Broadland worship band releases new folk music CD

A barn-dance band which was formed from the worship band of the Waterside Benefice in Norfolk has released its second album on CD – and the results have been approvingly described as ‘a quite remarkable achievement’.

The Occasional Ceilidh Band came from the creation of a pop-up worship band to handle whatever music was needed at any of the four churches in the benefice - Ludham, Potter Heigham, Catfield and Hickling.  When it was realised that the musicians all had an interest in folk music and dance, they formed a barn-dance band and are now a popular name on the folk scene, playing parties and community events, and also presenting dances for such organisations as the WI and church socials.

Ian Boughton from the band said “The remarkable thing about the band’s new CD is that it was virtually all home-made.  Most recordings are made in professional studios, but this new project was recorded by the band themselves, partly in the church hall at St. Catherine’s, Ludham, partly in a conservatory and partly in a home office!  Equally unusual is the fact that all the fifteen tracks on the CD are written by the band.”

One of the most notable of these tracks is ‘Christopher Burraway’, written by the band’s percussionist Eilish Rothney.  This was inspired by a memorial stone at St Mary the Virgin, Martham, which carries the curious inscription:  ‘theer Lyes Alice, Who By her life was my sister, my mistres, my mother and my wife...’   The song explains the tragic circumstances in which Alice and Christopher married, and then found themselves in an impossible situation.

Equally unusual, but more light-hearted, is the song ‘Boys from the Boatyard’, which describes the problems presented to Norfolk’s boat-hirers by tourists who should really not be trusted with boats on the Broads!

The Occasional Ceilidh Band has found itself in great demand during 2018, and expects to be playing several church events during the coming year.   Ceilidhs appear to be growing in popularity for church social events.
