Food for the mind and soul in South Creake

This year’s South Creake Lectures at the Church of Our Lady St Mary in South Creake will take place during the autumn and feature speakers of national renown.

These free lectures were launched in September 2015 and now attract a wide audience from across Norfolk and wider afield. This year, for the first time, there will be 3 lectures - one secular in theme, one religious and the third will cover both.

On Friday September 6, Professor Andrew Holmes will talk about his work ‘Progress’. Progress is a set of ten large-scale black and white drawings together with 10 texts that update John Bunyan’s allegory, Pilgrim’s Progress, to the 21st century. Most people know of John Bunyan’s first book, but few know of the second, which describes Pilgrim’s wife’s trials. Andrew describes Progress as a personal pilgrimage through the litter of modern life.

Professor Holmes is Britain’s leading Super Realist artist and is also an architect. He is best known for his realistic pencil drawings, but his work also encompasses printmaking, photography, film, and design, and has been exhibited and published widely for forty years. Holmes was Professor of Architecture at Oxford Brookes University, Guest Professor at the Technische Universitaet, Berlin, and Visiting Scholar at the Getty Research Institute. He lives and works in London.

The talk on Friday September 27 is entitled Freedom is Coming by Bishop Nick Baines. We live in uncertain times and are not always sure how to live accordingly. Isaiah 40-55 offers insight into faithful living in turbulent times, offering wisdom on hope, fear, the desert experience and joy. How do we hear words of comfort when we are in exile? And does any of this have anything to say to Brexit Britain? This lecture will take us from exile to hope via imagination.

Nick Baines has been Bishop of Leeds since the creation of the new diocese in 2014. Prior to this he was Bishop of Bradford and Bishop of Croydon. He broadcasts on both Radio 2 and Radio 4 and has published seven books. His latest book will be published in August. He has been a member of the House of Lords since 2014. His blog “Musings of a Restless Bishop” has been viewed more than 2 million times.

The lecture series concludes on Friday November 1 when Professor Patricia Casey discusses The Interface between Psychiatry and the Christian Faith.  The study of the relationship between mental health and faith has been gathering pace in recent years. The positive news about this receives little coverage in the general media although within medical circles there are several journals devoted to this area of research. Yet psychiatrists tend, at best, to be neutral or indifferent to this link and some are frankly hostile to any view that religion may be beneficial. This talk will explore the evidence that faith is beneficial to mental health and how this might come about. The possibility that it is harmful will also be explored.

Prof Casey was a Professor of Psychiatry at UCD from 1992 until taking early retirement in 2016. She continues to work in clinical practice in the Mater Hospital in Dublin. She has published over 120 peer review papers, contributed to 23 books and is the author of 13, including one published in July 2019. She chaired the Fitness to Practice Committee of the Irish Medical Council for several years. She writes a weekly column in the Irish Independent, and she is the editor of BJ Psych. Advances, published by the Royal College of Psychiatrists in London. She continues to write and publish original research, now focussing on adjustment (stress) disorder and religion and mental health.

All lectures start at 7pm, and take place at The Church of Our Lady Saint Mary, Church Lane, South Creake, Fakenham NR21 9LX. Advance booking is not necessary.

Organiser Sabine Leese said “These are free lectures, open to all, not fund-raisers, positioned as ‘food for the mind and soul’.”
