Acle Methodists' St Valentine's Day heARTwork

Acle Methodist Church is bringing more cheer into its local community with its continued heARTwork campaign marking St Valentine's Day.

As well as crafted hearts, there were sewn and knitted hearts and even baked biscuit hearts! All of the hearts (except the biscuits, which will find good homes!) are on display in the church windows.

The church creates regular displays in its church windows in order to brighten up the village and as a reminder that it is still an active church despite the building being closed for worship. There were poppies in November, angels bearing messages of hope in December and in January there is a lighthouse, below, which has been adopted by many churches as the symbol of the January Light project.

Being creative is a good way to beat the January blues and it is hoped the church will be full of colourful hearts spreading a little love through February.

“January Light encourages churches to spread a little light in their community during January, which can be a dismal month at the best of times” explained Sara Edwards from Acle Methodist Church.

“Acle has reached out to the community in several ways. Earlier in the year, an artist painted over 60 pebbles, with cheerful pictures or messages which were gradually being left around the village. There was a poignant response to this when someone found one of the smallest stones, painted as a robin. They reported that a family member had died of Covid the day before and finding the robin had caused them to recall the verse ‘Robins appear when loved ones are near’ and thanked the church ‘for this lovely act of kindness during these crazy times.’”

Church members have also engaged in writing specially designed January Light postcards to those who are alone or missed and sharing uplifting messages and images on its Facebook page.
