Norwich church's year of family food initiatives

Teaming up with supermarket Morrisons to deliver pizza-making kits to local families in Catton, Norwich, over half-term, was just the latest in a pandemic-long series of initiatives by Oak Grove Community Church to help vulnerable people.

Senior leader Darren Woodward, said: “Just before last Easter, when toilet rolls and pasta were in short supply, we came up with a simple response to the emerging pandemic and delivered simple care boxes of basic foodstuffs and some activities to about 17 families whom we had made contact with through the Kids Matter Parenting Programme that Lynette facilitates for us.”

Since then, securing various pots of funding, and gratefully received support and donations Oak Grove were able to deliver fortnightly boxes from April to June and then two ‘bumper’ summer boxes in July and August.

OakGrovePizzas640“With the provision of food in school holidays being a highly profiled matter in the media, we were pleased to secure funding to be able to provide two takeaway meals a week for the six weeks of the summer holiday, together with craft materials, games and activities to a separate 16 or so families alongside our box deliveries – we repeated this takeaway meal initiative during October half term.

“At Christmas we delivered boxes and bags of fresh produce to over 40 families. They contained fruit, veg and meat together with basics which would have been sufficient to provide 3-4 meals for the family and included a DIY Christingle with an invite to join our online Christingle service as well as a family game, and Christmas themed crafts and activities.”

The latest initiative over the February half-term again saw the church team deliver to 40 or so families, both fresh and non-perishable foodstuffs and crafts and activities, as well as the pizza-making kits from Morrisons and also ingredients for pancakes as it was Shrove Tuesday the day they were delivered.

Across the UK, Morrisons teamed up with local community groups to give away 60,000 pizza-making kits during the February half term to help fight holiday hunger.
