Twitter storms challenge Norwich climate cyclists

Two Norwich Christian climate activists completed a bike ride to five more cathedrals this week, adding to the six they have already visited and petitioned.

Riding to Rochester Cathedral from Chelmsford, Jim Green and Chris Hull then rode into London to be welcomed at Southwark and then St Paul's Cathedrals.

Their mission, as before, is to present the Southern African Bishop's Declaration, imploring the Anglican community to withdraw investments in fossil fuel companies.

A final visit to Chichester, after visiting Guildford, resulted in a lively debate on Twitter after one respondent suggested that "the appeal for divestment is naive and misguided". This drew a swift response from several others, including a green Anglican who said: "the stone age didn't end because we ran out of stones....but because we found something better".

Jim Green, after returning from riding over 200 miles on these five visits, said: "It is clear that our message is getting through, and we are finding our visits are prompting checks on the status of fossil fuel investments in the places we are visiting.". He added: " The outcomes of these checks shows that this is a rapidly changing scene."

The duo plan to visit more cathedrals and dioceses in the southern counties during the summer.

Chris Hull added: "It is wonderful to hear about different initiatives in the places we have visited, as well as having some honest discussion about the means to achieve much needed changes in lifestyle in our church communities. This included one unplanned stop at a rural church in Kent, where we shared much needed tea and cake with some church members who readily engaged in conversation about our bike ride and its aims."
