Charity to mark World Homeless Day in Norwich

Church leaders and those with a passion for helping tackle homelessness are invited to attend an event marking World Homeless Day on October 10 in Norwich.

The event, hosted by Christian homeless charity Hope into Action Norwich, takes place at 7pm at St Catherine’s Church, Aylsham Rd, Norwich NR3 2RJ. All will be made very welcome.

Head of Supporter Relations at Hope into Action, Lee Marsden, said: “It is estimated that there are around 150 million people who are homeless in the world and a further 1.6 billion precariously housed. Here in the UK we are in the midst of a housing crisis with over quarter of a million people with no place to call home.

“While rough sleeping is the most visible sign, many others are precariously housed, sofa surfing, sleeping in tents or sheds or temporarily housed in hotel rooms. Increasing food and energy prices, rising rents and mortgages, and a shortage of social housing means that the current homelessness crisis is set to get even worse.

“Where governments are unable or unwilling to tackle homelessness in a meaningful way the church has a responsibility to stand in the gap to demonstrate God’s love for the homeless – to provide shelter for the poor wanderer (Isaiah 58: 7). Hope into Action exists to enable churches to provide loving homes for the homeless,” said Lee.

Established 12 years ago in Peterborough, Hope into Action now partners with churches across Norfolk, and nationally with around 100 churches.

“Hope into Action has a proven model which works in tackling homelessness working with and providing homes for ex-offenders, those overcoming addiction, refugees, those fleeing domestic violence or human trafficking, and those leaving the sex industry,” said Lee.

“Churches working with Hope into Action, provide friendship and support to tenants and are making a real difference in individual lives. “

Hope into Action are looking for a further 50 churches to partner with in housing the homeless. If you would like to find out how your church could provide loving support for two or three otherwise homeless people please contact Norwich manager Debra Green at debra.green@hopeinotaction.org.uk or Head of Supporter Relations Lee Marsden at lee.marsden@hopeintoaction.org.uk
