Call to pray for King and nation before Coronation

The Presidents of Churches Together in England have issued a statement encouraging Christians to join in daily prayers for the King and the nation leading up to the Coronation on May 6 and have been joined by a senior East Anglia church leader.

The presidents, who include Archbishop Justin Welby and Cardinal Vincent Nichols, said: “The forthcoming Coronation of King Charles III is a moment of great importance and joy for this nation. As Presidents of CTE, we invite Christians from all traditions to join together in a period of daily prayer, for both the King and the nation, from Easter Day through to 6 May.

“We welcome the publication by the Church of England of the book of Daily Prayers for the Coronation of King Charles III which can be used as a guide to reflection. The Coronation will be a time to celebrate community, faith and service – values that are reflected in these prayers.”

The Daily Prayers

The book of prayers, produced by the Church of England combines themed daily readings and shares features of the Coronation Ceremony, exploring the Christian symbolism behind it.
The readings also reflect the value that King Charles III places on charitable work, environmentalism, volunteering and community life.

The Daily Prayers – a sample of which can be read online here – are available to order as a booklet from Church House Publishing.

They will also be available free via email and audio via the Church of England website and social media.

The Bishop of East Anglia, the Rt Rev Peter Collins has called upon the East Anglia Catholic community to pray for the intentions and wellbeing of the Sovereign as His Majesty prepares for his Coronation on Saturday May 6.

Bishop Peter said: “I was honoured and delighted to accompany Cardinal Vincent Nichols to Buckingham Palace for the presentation of Loyal Addresses. As we all prepare for the ceremonial and festivities of the coronation let us be united in keeping the sovereign at the heart of our prayer. God Save the King.”

The suggested format is as follows:
A Triduum of Prayer (from Wednesday May 3 to Friday May 5) for the King’s intentions as he prepares to assume the fulness of his responsibility. The format can be decided by each parish/community.
On the evening of Friday May 5, a Mass for the intentions of His Majesty should be celebrated.
On Sunday May 7, the day after the Coronation, the Prayer of the Faithful should include a Petition of Intercession for the King.
Domine salvum fac (in English or Latin) and/or the National Anthem should be sung at the end of Mass.
