Jesus meeting the needs of the moment

Ruth Lilley is inspired by the story of the risen Jesus providing breakfast for His disciples, and reminds us that Jesus provides for our needs.

I like to go for a walk, especially an early morning walk when life is quieter. Just recently I went on one such walk and there was a moment of Wow when God broke right through into the here and now. Through His Spirit, He revealed himself in a gentle whisper. I love that about God’s nature! Often, when I really need to hear something, He doesn’t shout it, instead He does it with a tender whisper or a kind prod in the right direction!

In that particular moment I had been saying thank you for the way God faithfully answers prayer, and He gently remined me that He answers my own prayers too – the prayers I pray for me. He reminded me that I have exactly what I need. I might not have what I would want, yet, I have everything I need.

Then, my mind pictured Jesus, on the shore, waiting for His friends. Jesus had provided breakfast for them (John 21:1-14). What beautiful kindness - and in that moment, Jesus gave His friends exactly what they needed. In my mind, I see Jesus welcoming His friends with such a look of love in His eyes. After a night of fishing, Jesus knew that the disciples would need their breakfast and today, Jesus knows what I will need.

Therefore, that is the truth that I would like to take into today. To stand on and step into the truth that God, in His wonderful wisdom, in His amazing provision, in His gentle love, and then in His outstanding grace, will give me every single thing that I need for today.

Along the way, it is likely that I will have to pause and refocus. There may be moments when I might have to let go and show grace when I would rather not because, again in His wisdom, God is shaping me to be more like Him.

So, when I picture the scene on the shore and how Jesus provided everything the disciples needed in that moment, I can know that Jesus will perfectly provide all that I need for each moment – whatever it is that I am doing. If I look closer, I can see Jesus’ look of love fixed on me, which is my fuel for each moment – whatever it is that I am doing.

I know that I can simply trust because He sees the end from the beginning and He knows the path I will tread, He knows it perfectly. I can trust because I am in His hands and that means I am safe.
