Sheringham church shows contemporary bible art

A free art exhibition showing the story of the bible through 21 contemporary portraits, which has featured on BBC’s Songs of Praise, will be held at Lighthouse Community Church in Sheringham in August. Tony Rothe reports.

Drawn to Imperfection is both a book and exhibition offering an engaging invitation into the story of the bible. As you meet 21 characters from scripture and experience a creative re-telling of their story, there is the opportunity to explore through their eyes a deeper understanding of the heart of God. The exhibition at Lighthouse is described as an inspiring and unique resource that gives space to encounter God and engage with the humanity of those who walked through the pages of the bible.

The artist is Dave Nevard, and his exhibition featured in an episode of BBC’s Songs of Praise when he exhibited in his own church in York back in February this year. View the clip here.

The book which accompanies the exhibition contains a collection of short stories and artwork bringing to life the bible in a fresh way, providing an inspiring resource for personal reflection.

A visitor to a previous exhibition said, “You can’t get away from the fact that the bible isn’t just a book - when you see it like that, it’s so clear, it’s a million living stories.”

Dave Nevard has a passion for portraiture. After graduating with a degree in fine art, he spent 15 years working as an artist, leader and teacher with Youth With a Mission, particularly focused on exploring portraiture amongst those who are marginalised; collaborating in amplifying the voices of those who struggle to be heard. Now working as a freelance artist/illustrator, Dave loves taking on opportunities to bring value to engaging storytelling. Blending influences from street art with traditional realism, he seeks to create emotive work with paint and charcoal alongside digital work.

Drawn to Imperfection will be on display at Lighthouse Community Church, 62 Cromer Road, Sheringham, NR26 8RT, from Tuesday 12 to Thursday 14 August, 10.30am to 4pm, with a preview evening on Monday 11 August from 7pm to 9pm.

Lighthouse cafe will be open until 2.30pm each day serving fine coffees and teas, home-made cakes and light lunches.

Entry to the exhibition will be free, and all are welcome to come along.
