Norwich book fair to support development charity

The annual Feed the Minds book fair in Norwich is set to run once again at St Andrew’s Church this month to support a training project in Pakistan.

This year’s Feed the Minds book fair runs from Thursday 18 to Saturday 20 at St Andrews Church (10am to 4.30pm apart from the Saturday when it is 10am to 3pm with a silent auction at 12 noon). The Lord Mayor, Vivien Thomas will open the event.

Funds raised will support a project that aims to promote literacy and improve working conditions for women cotton pickers in the Sindh province of Pakistan.

Organiser Jonathan Piesse said: “The Sindh District continues to experience high levels of poverty, low educational attainment for women, and gender inequality. There are over half a million women cotton pickers and many of these women have no knowledge of their basic employment rights or how to challenge unfair working practices.”

Project participant Shahida said: “I am very grateful that I have an opportunity to start to read and write. It was difficult for us to remember the number of days we worked and we could not calculate our wage properly. But now we will not be cheated.”

Feed the Minds is an international development charity with over 50 years’ experience of providing opportunities for marginalised communities, particularly women, who have missed out on education due to conflict, discrimination, or extreme poverty.
